MINING AND CORPORATE SOCIAL debt instrument: BHP BILLITON AND THE TINTAYA DIALOGUE
CASE SYNOPSIS
Deputy Manager of the BHP Billiton Tintaya tap, Lucio Rios who had considered the NGOs as agitators and the threat to Perus economic progress became a supporters of the NGOs and started backwash them as partners. BHP Billiton and Rios engaged the community which latishr became known as Tintaya Dialogue Table. This change didnt come off the disconsolate; it was actually the result of Rioss participation in the Oxfams social responsibility training that was conducted in Orissa, India.
In late 2000, Oxfam turned on to the Tintaya tomentum Mine in Peru with a list of grievances of which most of them had to do with harm to the environment, forceful voiding of thousands of local residents . Billiton however denied those claims and signed up an agreement with Oxfam to take in training on sustainability and the impacts of large-scale infrastructure projects on communities (page 2).
Although the alternatives did not aim at solving each problem associated yet was still the most progressive of any mining effect in Peru (Page 6).
BACKGROUND
BHP Billiton was created through the merger of BHP limited and Billiton plc in 2001. The ships company does business in mining of precious metals and in the exploration of oil and gas. The company has its business in 26 countries with 35,000 employees everyplace the globe.
